With a Hammer for My Heart, written in 1997, was her first novel for adults. Her work frequently focuses on the lives and concerns of the Appalachian people, particularly those in her native state of Kentucky.

The Hangman’s Beautiful Daughter by Sharyn McCrumb

This award-winning southern writer is best known for her Appalachian Ballad novels set in the mountains of North Carolina and Tennessee. Her work reveals complex aspects of the Appalachian way of life, and is vibrant with characters such as Nora Bonesteel, who possesses the ability of “second sight.” McCrumb also has written about NASCAR in two novels, St. Dale and Once Around the Track.

Clay’s Quilt by Silas House

Set in the hills of Kentucky and written by the multiple award-winning Kentucky author, this novel was voted on and chosen by Boone County residents as the selection for Boone County Public Library’s first community-wide reading project. After a successful first year, the project expanded in 2007 to become Northern Kentucky One Book One Community including Boone, Campbell, Grant, and Kenton County Public Libraries.
